Yeah I gave myself the weekend to process everything. I have made some big decisions about how I’m going to share what I went through with the general public – which I believe will become blatantly clear later this week in a number of ways. However, I am (to quote from my actual story that caused all the controversy in my life,) a “changed geek.”
One thing I will say is that I am going to write about this for DollyMix in some way. Or, at least I believe that I will as long as Cate gives me the go-ahead.
Another thing I will say is that I am honestly surprised that I have been on the ‘Net as long as I have and that this is the first time this has happened to my writing. Mebee it’s that I’ve never published anything incendiary enough to warrant the attention of spammers or gankers before now… Mebee it HAS happened to me and I’ve not caught it. I’m honestly floored at all the stories which I’ve heard over the past week – from a multitude of people near and far – who have had this exact same situation happen…
In the end, the thing which hurt me the most was having something I was proud of and had fun writing associated with something which was clearly delineated in my mind as being wrong. I’ve been thinking about this and I think that I wouldn’t have freaked out the way I had if a blog I didn’t know picked up something I wrote and published it in context… I might have been like “Hey, I see you reposted my content, thanks for the acknowledgment that you like my stuff; but, please ask next time.”
Maybe I should freak out a little in those situations… ’cause allowing a legit site to gank my content w/out asking opens the door for a “but, they did it, why can’t I” argument for the type of site which happened to gank my content this time. Maybe I should be excruciatingly diligent in citing where I get every Google image from, every paraphrase outside the 20 words which constitute “fair use” from… Because, having had my own work exploited I would never want someone to stumble across anything I’ve put out there and think I was violating their creative space.
You know?
Not that I do, but sometimes I get a little lazy about crediting photos which are proliferated on Google images or Getty Images… Which is something I need to watch.
